Observer Perspectives

I distinguish system theoretically between two observer perspectives:

  • as an interpretive observer, I observe with the implicit - and usually unconscious - questions "What is it?", "What does it mean?" or "What is it good for?" I perceive objects that I can turn into phenomena.

As an interpretive observer, I particularly observe observers.

  • as a constructive observer, i.e. as a "toolmaking animal" I observe with the questions "How is it constructed?" or "How does it work?" (note 1)

I have to take the constructive perspective willingly, because as an observer I perceive my environment - quasi natural - in an interpretative way. I consciously choose the constructive perspective if I want to understand or explain what I have perceived to be interpretative (note 2).

In the constructive perspective, of course, I do not see observers, because I cannot construct observers. In the constructive perspective I observe systems.

I have explicitly based my explanation of 1st order systems theory on these two perspectives. I will focus on them now and relate them to each other later (note 3).

Instructions:

Search for analogies to these perspectives!

The distinction between observer perspectives is a definite possibility. One can use other distinctions to achieve other purposes.

Metacommunication

The distinction between construction and interpretation, which I place here in the observer, appears to me in any other distinctions that underlie various "ontologies". Nature and culture, for example, stand for what we are given to interpret and for what we produce.
