| − | The gentle genius of Donaldson’s Gruffalo – never mind the reverential devotion it inspires in millions of children – places a considerable burden of expectation on the theatrical adaptation that plays at the Lyric Theatre until the middle of January. Its cast – Susanna Jennings as the mouse, Timothy Richey as a selection of salivating predators and Tom Crook as the Gruffalo – certainly make for colourful and energetic company. There are jolly musical interludes, some knockabout “He’s behind you!” interaction, while the appearance of the shaggy-haired Gruffalo is worth the wait – with the caveat that it was hard to make out 'the poisonous wart at the end of his nose' from Row J.
